A one-day training/meeting for and with parents to help them become effective advocates for their children with special needs

As many parents know, the educational challenges their children face are significant and can be life-altering.   Students with identified learning disabilities, attention or emotional difficulties, physical and/or cognitive challenges, autism, hearing or vision loss or other challenges often require significant support to truly benefit from their education whether in a regular classroom or special class or program.  They may need placement in their home school or perhaps even a non-public school.   Many students have difficulties but have not been identified by their schools as needing special education.

Parents know when their children need more help than is offered in a regular public school classroom, and may even be aware there is something called special education in the public schools, but don’t know where to begin or how to successfully navigate the process.   Special education can be confusing, the rules complex, and dealing with school officials can be daunting and frustrating.  Parents watch their children suffer but are overwhelmed by the process.  That need not and should not be the case.

For over sixty-five years combined, Michael Zatopa and Lawrence Siegel have been helping parents to navigate the special education system and ensure that their children are provided what they need to succeed educationally.  The federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandates that all disabled students receive an education from the public schools that that is appropriate and individually designed for your child, if your child is found legally disabled.  Parents can and must understand not only to what special education support their child is entitled, but how to master the practical steps and strategies needed to insure that it happens in a timely and complete manner.

Because most parents cannot afford an attorney, they feel stuck.  SEW is designed to provide a group of parents - from 10-30 - a one day training that will not only provide them with an understanding of their child’s rights under the IDEA but also effective tools to ensure professional evaluations of their child and the development of, and agreement to, a comprehensive and appropriate educational program. The one day training includes a comprehensive power point, inter-active workshop and then afternoon meetings with you so that you can apply these strategies to your child’s unique situation.

Please call or email us if you or your organization is interested in having its members attend our workshop.  The fee for each family for this full day workshop, including provision of “The Complete IEP Guide,” by Lawrence Siegel will be approximately $300.

"It was a fantastic workshop......bring Larry Siegel back...”   Parent Participant 2014 Workshop

“Mike did a great job giving us not only an understanding of special education law, but the practical steps we could take right away to help our son.”  Parent participant in 2014 training conducted by Mike Zatopa
